Got a saliva drug test looming in the distance? Don’t sweat it. We’ve got just the tips and tricks to make sure you pass! We’ve put together this handy resource page to share everything you’ll need to know about saliva drug testing and how to pass your test - even if you’re a daily user!
Lucky for you, saliva tests are the easiest drug test to pass because drug toxins don’t stay in your mouth for very long at all. Compared to urine, blood, or hair tests, saliva drug tests are a breeze! Still, there’s quite a bit you should know to be prepared for your upcoming test, so let’s dive in!
When you use drugs, your body immediately gets to work breaking down the chemicals in your drug of choice to form “drug metabolites”. These metabolites can show up in your saliva if you use drugs orally (smoking or ingesting), but they can also move from your bloodstream into your saliva for a short period of time.
Saliva tests (also known as spit tests or swab tests) are most commonly used for drug screens. For a saliva drug screen, a lab tech will take a swab and use it to soak up saliva from your mouth. They’ll then squeeze the swab onto an instant test. Typically a highly sensitive, rapid results EMIT test is used. These tests are designed to look for any traces of drug metabolites in your saliva and will provide your results within minutes. If your test comes back positive for any drug metabolites, it indicates that you’ve used a particular drug and they’ll typically send your sample to a lab for a more accurate procedure (also known as a “mass spectrometry confirmation test”) to be run on your saliva sample to confirm the results.
Drug metabolites can remain in your saliva anywhere from 2 hours after your last use (for substances like cocaine) to about 3 days after your last use (for chronic weed smokers).
First thing’s first: if you know you have a saliva drug test coming up, try to stop using drugs at least 72 hours before your test. Since drug metabolites clear out of your mouth pretty rapidly, this 3-day window should give you plenty of time to still “swab clean” for your test. Just make sure to keep good oral hygiene habits - you know, brush and floss regularly to help clear out those pesky metabolites. Also, keep your mouth salivating! Drink water frequently, chew gum, or suck on sour candies to help rid your salivary glands of any leftover drug toxins that may be present.
But, what if your test was sprung on you the morning after you took a massive bong rip? Since saliva tests are typically used for drug screening, they are often unexpected and unannounced. For these instances, you can use a detox mouthwash or a detox gum to fully rid your saliva of any traces of drug use for at least 30 minutes - letting you spit clean, even if you’ve recently lit up!
Saliva detox products (like Rapid Clear’s Spit Clean or Oral Clear Saliva Gum) will get rid of any drug toxins left in your mouth for 30 minutes. They’re super easy to conceal in a pocket or purse, so they’re great to have on hand for those unexpected, surprise tests. Plus, both types of products are completely undetectable to both the initial drug screen and the confirmation test!
Detox mouthwash and detox gum are both really easy to use. If you’re using a detox mouthwash, just swish with the fluid for 2-3 minutes, spit it out, and you’ll be good to go. If you’re using detox gum, just chew the gum and let it’s juices coat your entire mouth. The detox gum starts working in just 30 seconds. Both products will leave your saliva toxin free for 30 minutes so you can easily pass your saliva drug test!
If you know you have a test coming up, the easiest way to pass is to abstain from using drugs until after your test. But, if you’re subject to random saliva drug screening and don’t want to have to give up the drugs for good, pick up some saliva detox products and keep ‘em on hand for those inevitable pop quizzes.
